In Grey’s Anatomy Season 1 we meet Meredith Grey, a woman trying to lead a real life while doing a job that makes having a real life impossible.

Meredith Grey is a first year surgical intern from the Seattle Grace Hospital, which is the toughest surgical residency program west of Harvard. She is joinged by fellow first-year interns Cristina Yang, Alex Karev, Izzie Stevens and George O’Malley who were students just yesterday. Today they’re doctors are all juggling the ups and downs of their own personal lives.

The five interns in Grey’s Anatomy struggle to form friendships in this most stressful and competitive atmosphere at the hospital. Meredith Grey’s medical ambition is overshadowed by a troubling secret which is that her mother, a noted pioneering surgeon, is struggling with a tragic and devastating illness.

Cristina  Yang is a study in contradiction; Yang is highly competitive and driven and wants to make it ‘on her own’. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on the other hand is the small-town girl who grew up in a poor background, but in spite of paying for her medical career by modeling she’s still struggles with her self-esteem.

George O’Malley is the warm but insecure boy next door who always manages to do or say the wrong thing at the wrong time at the hospital and in his personal life. In spite of his attraction to women, he’s treated as “just one of the girls” by the other interns. Finally we have Alex Karev, the intern the other interns love to hate, who masks his working class roots with arrogance and ambition.

The interns are guided by an established team of doctors who are determined to shape them into skilled surgeons or break them.  Dr Miranda Bailey is a senior resident responsible for training them and is so tough that she’s nicknamed “The Nazi”  by the other doctors. Derek Shepherd is flirtatious but  an extremely capable surgeon who shares a forbidden but undeniable sexual attraction with Meredith Grey.  DrPreston Burke’s arrogance is second only to his skill with a scalpel. Dr. Richard Webber oversees them all, Seattle Grace’s paternal, but no-nonsense chief of surgery.
